Melamine itself is quite toxic. It is an irritant when inhaled, or comes in contact with skin or eyes. Contact with melamine over long periods of time can cause cancer or reproductive damage as well. It is especially harmful when inhaled, consumed, or absorbed through the skin because once melamine enters the bloodstream, it gathers in the kidneys and form solid yellow crystals (kidney stones) that block and damage the kidneys. Small stones usually don't cause problems, but melamine creates large quantities of crystals that do. Kidney stones cause intense pain as it passes from the kidney down to the bladder. http://www.chineseenergytherapy.co.nz/site/chineseenergy/images/Foto_Gallery_Liver_Stones/7_1_1.jpg http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/labreportstones.jpg (From left to right)
Kidney stones in general pass from the kidney, where they are formed, through the renal tract and into the bladder, where it exits the body the next time a person goes to the bathroom. However, this causes intense pain as it does, and can block the renal tract, especially in children and babies, where their renal tracts are smaller than adults.
